How to get Cockatrice Cockatrice can be downloaded from https://cockatrice.github.io/. As a result of this, actual aristocrats shenanigans seemed hard to come by (though it has not been for a lack of trying). I am making a few final swaps to get the right balance at rare. We'll be trying a "league" format and upgrading our decks using another player's sideboard next time. The set's design forced its way through, emphasizing a Voltron build with lots of creatures that want to attack on their own. It doesn't support tournaments yet, but, everything will come eventually! If you are new to deckbuilding or just don't want to spend a lot of time with your card pool, you might want to build your deck around a clear linear theme that cares about a specific type of card. I am making a few more changes to really hone in on the aristocrats theme in white. All in all, this game, like the last one, felt like what you'd expect from a casual Commander game. Gratuitous Violence --> Fiery Emanicpation: Basically the same thing, only better! Draft this Cube In response, I'm replacing this multicolor removal with monocolor options. Utvara Hellkite --> Terror of the Peaks: Both of these are fun, splashy dragons, but Terror of the Peaks has become more popular, while Utvara Hellkite seems better in a dedicated dragons deck. He woke up on the beach with an intelligence of 18 and warlock powers. This site is unaffiliated. New themes have successfully manifested themselves, including +1/+1 counters (Skullbriar) and light tribal (goblins, elves). I'd been thinking they should be included alongside all the most popular Commander staples like Smothering Tithe at this rarity, but there's a difference between a card that accrues so much value that it's in every deck and a card that basically says "I win" (and therefore goes in every deck). As a result, I'm making some changes to the archetypes: The following card swaps support the archetype shifts I just outlined: I've also been feeling it's a little too easy to do a 4+ color "good stuff" deck. Wizards of the Coast LLC. This approach worked out well enough, but it put me in the position of being a kingmaker in the first game, as I could easily dispatch one player but would lose to the other. Zendikar Rising features two Commander decks intended as on-ramps for newer players and introductions to the amazing world of Commander. Baleful Strix mtg 1. There was a lot of ebb and flow to who seemed to be in the lead, with Queen Marchesa getting in some early hits but then being superseded by Tayam's superior board presence. I've broken the "rares" into various modules to provide some structure to the card selection and in the even that we ever want to flavor sessions in a specific way (e.g., "combo" session or "5C good stuff" session), but moving forward I plan to just randomly select a quarter of all the rares for each session, ensuring each player gets an even portion of them. When Heartless Hidetsugu came out, Saheeli had been eliminated, and Karlov was at 4 life, very easy to finish off. To support this shift, I made the following changes. Some cards are now affordable in paper, while others have become a little redundant with new additions to the cube. These minor tweaks reduce some repetitiveness in the cube. Altogether, about a fifth of the cube has changed, so it will be interesting to see how these changes manifest themselves in actual play! The two of them kind of got into it while Xyris (manascrewed) and Marchesa, the Black Rose (weak) weren't doing much. The ability destroys the creature at the end of the combat, which is after all first strike and normal damage dealing is done. These shifts address a few things: I notably skipped over Commander Legends because I suspect that set will merit its own overhaul. We're playing with excellent but not overpowered cards. (Commander Deck, 100 cards) Forces of the Imperium Collector's Edition (Commander Deck, 100 cards) Design Principles Explore archetypes and cards unique to EDH Cockatrice is an open-source, multiplayer platform for playing tabletop card games over a network such as Magic the Gathering. These subthemes not only support additional commanders but also help to connect the archetypes together. Terms of Use | I've promised my players that there are no combos in this set, and I've made good on that so far. Feeds | The exceptions are protection, hexproof, and shroud, which are essential to encouraging voltron strategies. A Magic game on UnTap What Is UnTap? As always, someone got manascrewed, someone else got out to an early lead, making himself a target. Even then, he probably would have won given one more turn. However, instead of the usual suspects of the original duals, fetches, etc., I go down a tier to include checklands at "rare" and painlands at "uncommon." Although that's the quick and dirty method, perfecting removal requires a deep dive once the rest of the set has been crafted to ensure the following: Lesson #2 for cube designers is to not go overboard with multicolor spells. This final batch of adjustments to the "common" module is mostly about adding in some placeholders that properly adjust the creature-noncreature balance. I have quite a few more changes. Although I've cut back on the manafixing a bit, I'd rather have the push for these repetitive durdle decks show up only on occasion, so I'm going to undo a bit of the most recent changes, simply reverting to the decent and more diverse multicolor options I took out, using them to replace the multicolor removal. Learn more. In addition, many of these swaps are just putting back cards that used to be in here. We also use optional cookies to personalize content and ads, provide social media features and analyze web traffic. In their place, I'm returning a suite of equipment, which I'd previously cut because I thought voltron strategies were to prevalent. However, I think the scales have tipped toward the token/aristocrats themes, and a lot of RW commanders are useless without more equipment on hand. I realized I'd been mostly ignoring cards related to tribal and other subthemes and swiftly dismissing hybrid cards, all of which help monocolor decks work. We've got another pool to go before all the changes from July are fully manifested, and then there will be an opportunity to update the cube with all the new sets that have come out since then. Create Sealed "Value Engine": As the most popular high power commander for both aristocrats and graveyard themes, Karador is probably the go-to commander for this player. Reviewing the new commanders from the past year or so, tokens have emerged as an interesting potential theme, particularly in GU, so I'm making some changes to see if I can promote those commanders. This cube strives to include popular Commander staples, and multicolor cards offer up some of the most popular removal spells in the format. The removal was right down the middle: of course everyone wished they had more answers to opposing threats, but everyone was able to do something about the most important challenges to their game state. 26.9.2016: Misdirection out, Muddle the Mixture in. mtg.wtf. When they do, they rely on the commander moreso than the cards in the cube. Hopefully you will be able to carve out an appropriate deck from your pool of 120 cards. This diminishes the overall support for WBG Voltron, but that archetype has been doing fine, perhaps even showing up a tad too often. I'm also swapping out some generally useful utility lands for utility lands that more specifically support the set's archetypes. This collection lives at https://github.com/mtgtrice/mtg-decks. Most of these cards are fairly harmless inclusions that'll provide some variety while they're in here but won't necessarily be missed when inevitably replaced by the oncoming onslaught of cards from Commander Legends 2. sign in The first type revolves around card supertypes. However, card draw is not readily available in every color here, so the Queen Marchesa deck (for example) is probably going to run out of steam. This is a common problem in cubes, but I didn't worry about it as much here, since I figured you'd want as many colors as possible available to play 3-color decks on "average." Usually just sideboard your commander for easy finding before games. Having at last input a full 360 cards, I tested this cube out today, building four sealed decks as if I was one of four players: Overall, these sealed pools were decent, and I was very glad to see most "players" able to shape the pool to their interests. How to use Cockatrice to play Commander (mtg - cedh - edh) Ever wonder how we play our games of commander and wanted to learn how to use cockatrice to do this? As the game continued after the first player left, a lot of the clunkiness receded, as players were jockeying for position going into the endgame. There are three types of linear decks you can try with this cube. I can see it be very frustrating to take forever building a deck from your pool only to find no commander really works with what you think your deck should be doing or picking out a commander only to find it isn't really supported by your pool. Unfortunately, most of the archetype support so far has been heavily weighted toward noncreature spells, which is another reason why I wanted to set aside a suite of cards devoted to creature-based tribal themes. This commit does not belong to any branch on this repository, and may belong to a fork outside of the repository. This was not as essential here, since "curving out" is not really a successful strategy in EDH. 37 11 19 8 12 12 1 11 19 8 12 12 1 I'd like a baseline of mass removal guaranteed to be present in every session, but it does not need to be the most popular, powerful spells. Cockatrice is a downloadable program that runs in tandem with a program called Oracle, which is the card library (Both are installed on your computer when you install Cockatrice). Growing Rites of Itlimoc --> Scute Swarm: A Gaea's Cradle (which is in the set already) that makes you work for it versus a potentially fun lands/tokens enabler, Guardian Project --> Beast Whisperer: Basically the same card except a 2/3 creature instead of an enchantment, Zendikar Resurgent --> Ancient Greenwarden: Kind of redundant with the cards above for a splashier mythic from Zendikar Rising, Ramunap Excavator --> Beastmaster Ascension: Redundant effect for "Overrun" effect that's not yet in the set, Bloom Tender --> Quest for Renewal: Multicolor manafixer for more interesting/unique effect, Runic Armasaur --> Branching Evolution: Boring defensive card for an intriguing buildaround. While swapping these modules in and out helps to increase variety, there would be even more variety if I just lumped them all together and included a random portion of them in each pool. I'm feeling pretty good about this format right now. Other times, I add a card that seems like it will be popular, but it ends up not being so hot. Queen Marchesa was in it the whole time but runs out of steam against slower decks; I think making the switch from humans to angels for white's tribal theme will provide a decent boost here. This set finally got played for real this evening. With the recent shifts in archetypes, I revisited this portion of the multicolor section and found excellent options for all the themes I'm supporting here. The deck was extremely resilient and seemed to always be lurking as a major threat no matter what the other players did. There were big plays and massive resource accumulation. Tokens have actually been a strong subtheme in the set, largely due to the presence of token producers in white, which I'd included to support the aristocrats theme. My recent angels tribal deck required raiding this cube. In some cases, I have to add a card with the relevant keyword; in others, I'm removing one. People have been asking about my affection for Planeswalkers, and my reasoning here is this: 2/3 GAAIV will pretty much block everything in the format. I'll eventually add a "sideboard" that allows a fourth player to play. These are popular auto-includes in any deck of their corresponding color and will therefore remain as part of the broader "uncommon" module. Red's swaps are mostly minor upgrades to specific effects. Example: http://mtg.gamepedia.com/Khans_of_Tarkir/Intro_packs. Mass removal helps to keep the board clear of blockers. Add to Cart. Fortunately for you, most of the high power commanders will be to your liking. The monocolor decks--which unfortunately make up a good chunk of the commander pool--are probably the toughest to pull off here. "Stealth Mode": Every commander on the list for this player has blue, so I started there. Contact | An improved visual deck editor with more sorting options A responsive design that scales for mobile devices (still a work in progress for mobile phones) Better searching options power/toughness and more Decks stay private until they have enough cards to playtest, so you won't accidentally playtest a deck with 10 cards in it Coming features It also didn't help that Jeremy and I were playing without blue; a single counterspell would have ruined Noah's plan and ended his gamebut it's not fair that blue is the only color that can cut off this strategy. You can use Morophon, the Boundless for any tribe you want. I expect this batch of changes will be the last for a while. In addition, there are a few changes I meant to make last time: Quite a few sets have come out since I tightened up the archetypes in the cube, and over that time a few things have gotten off track. Another fifteen cards seem like decent alternatives that we're trying for now but might just swap in and out randomly. Jeremy and Ryan had much more threatening board states early on, and casting just one measly planeswalker did little to change my relative threat level. Discord Server | A collection of Magic: The Gathering (MTG) decks from the Competitive Commander (EDH) Format. These changes are more dramatic than prior ones, except the archetype shifts I did recently. This cube can probably go a little lower since everyone will automatically have access to their commander, essentially giving them a ninth card in their opening hand that's always a creature. Heartless Hidetsugu had been the default target for most of the game because it didn't have any blockers up and was being played by the "player" who'd been most successful in the prior two games. This has only added to the hodgepodge "good stuff" feel of the multicolor section, even though some of the options weren't that "good" at all. Nonetheless, these changes are attacking significant themes in a way I have yet to do, so I suspect it will feel more dramatic than usual. These swaps clean things up, often just reverting to whatever was in here before. Ironically, the swaps below favor noncreatures over creatures, but including all the uncommons balances things out. Commanded by Ghired, Conclave Exile out of the box, the Primal Genesis is fast and fun to play. At "common," I provide a creature and a spell for each color pair, emphasizing the archetypes the cube is trying to support. Force of Nature 3rd Edition (R) Creature - Elemental $2.79 Blessing 3rd Edition (R) Enchantment - Aura $0.79 The shift to "rarities" seems to be working well. I guess we could have done a house rule, but it felt too unusual to me so I did not propose it. Terms of Use | This cube is comprised of 72 "suites" of five cards. Lullmage Mentor --> Merrow Reejerey: Extremely narrow merfolk card for slightly less narrow merfolk card, Goblin Chirurgeon --> Legion Loyalist: Weird Voltron protection for a more typical "go wide" goblin support card, Brash Taunter --> Goblin Offensive / Goblin Goliath: Combo piece for a more straightforward goblins payoff/enabler. I'm replacing it with a relative recent manarock that'll help encourage more monocolor decks. Update 20. of April, 2016: Council's Judgement out, Mox Diamond in. This shift opened up room for white to get blink as a new subtheme, which supports several commanders that used to be "fringe competiive" but are now eligible for this cube. I was originally going to just add in the most popular creatures for each color that weren't already in here, but it looked like some tribal synergies would bring in some more commanders, so I went that route instead. Between the snake tokens + Gaea's Cradle and Thassa's Oracle + 40-card decks, his build was unstoppable. Being a normal cockatrice, he just pecked at the contract, which counted as signing it. Help | At the same time, the underlying structure of the cube remains consistent: themes are still apparent, and build-arounds keep circulating, creating tempting unique directions for deckbuilding. Most of these colors have plenty of other options under other categories as well. Using the first four profiles for another round of sealed decks led to the following results: All in all, every "player" got their first choice, except the fourth player, who picked a commander based on his pool rather than building his pool to a commander. Unfortunately, despite having enough cards to make a control deck work, there was only one wheel effect in this pool, so Nekusar is unlikely to go off the way you want him to. Don't forget to update the Cockatrice card database before you play to make sure the new cards are available. These decklists are not card-for-card product displays but rather interactive lists of the cards included in each deck. We have several swaps from these sets that are likely locked in because they seem like solid upgrades. Everflowing Chalice --> Forsaken Monument: Powered cube staple for interesting colorless buildaround from Zendikar Rising that should upgrade filterlands to be more on par with other lands, Enchanted Evening --> Steel of the Godhead: Combo piece for more popular hybrid card in the same colors, 3-color cards --> Modal Double-Faced Cards: Although they are powerful, the 3-color cards work in very few dacks, whereas the MDFCs are extremely flexible and representative of Zendikar Rising's most memorable mechanical innovation. You also don't want your life total to go up (or at least not go down) as often as possible. Sometimes I add a card without realizing how similar it is to a card that's already in here. In fact, I'm considering adding 90 cards to the "sideboard," which I'd add in whenever we have an extra player. 10.9.17 Telepathy sucks, Paradox Engine in. This site 2022 TappedOut.net, LLC I explain each swap below, but overall I'm trying to: I'm surprised that these seemingly limited goals are leading to nearly ten percent of the set changing, but I guess a bunch of small goals add up! It felt like just enough back-and-forth. Trilands --> Triomes: Themes are situated in wedges, so the fixing should lean in that direction too. Games felt like Commander, with big swings and dramatic plays. Approach of the Second Sun --> Crested Sunmare, Eidolon of Countless Battles --> Spear of Heliod, Heavenly Blademaster --> Sphere of Safety, Karn's Temporal Sundering --> Spawning Kraken, Helm of the Gods --> Blade of the Bloodchief, Outlaws' Merriment --> Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion, Murkfiend Liege --> Shield of the Oversoul, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx --> Westvale Abbey, Liliana of the Dark Realms --> Professor Onyx, Indomitable Creativity --> Storm-Kiln Artist, Beastmaster Ascension --> Heartwood Storyteller. Yes, they are fun and powerful, but they go far fewer decks than monocolor cards. The easiest place to start is probably to just pick out the three colors that have the most cards you're excited to play and pick one of the corresponding commanders: If you want even more flexibility, you can go up to four or five colors, but you will be likely be relying on a clunkier mana base, making casting your spells trickier. A lot of that might have to do with 40-card decks, which we've since increased to 60 cards. Finally, I'm replacing a suite of equipment with artifacts that specifically support the archetypes of the cube. Since I'm not increasing the fixing to support these multicolor additions, I am going to cut back on a cycle of the more generic/general multicolor spells. The removed cards will still be included at "uncommon," but not in the default configuration shown here. Some commanders moved out of the "high power" tier. If you can identify a more focused theme, you can go for a 2-color deck, which will have a much easier time with mana. My cobbled-together Atraxa Proliferate deck struggled with mana on one game because I didn't mulligan but managed to pull off its +1/+1 counter nonsense in both other games. Dragonmaster Outcast --> Curse of Opulence: A popular card for dragons (which are not really a theme here) for a more generally useful (and interesting) 1-drop. I'd set these cards aside because I wanted to prioritize more interesting multicolor spells, but I'm now realizing I could really upgrade the removal here and open up the flexibility of the multicolor cards by bringing these removal spells back in. Ruthless Regiment Download Commander 2020 Commander Deck 2020-04-17 Commander (1) 1 Jirina Kudro {1} {R} {W} {B} Creature (32) 1 Adriana, Captain of the Guard {3} {R} {W} 1 Alesha, Who Smiles at Death {2} {R} 1 Banisher Priest {1} {W } {W} 1 Bounty Agent {1} {W} 1 . In addition, there are some long overdue upgrades and other shifts based on what's in/out of my constructed decks. These commanders have the most flexible color identities, so you should be able to play pretty much whatever your sealed pool presents. Articles and comments are user-submitted and do not represent official endorsements of this site. Finally, the "stunt" player got the boot early in both games, which seems entirely appropriate. We'll still have Commanders, and we aren't using Schemes, but we're borrowing a mishmash of rules from across these formats to create something more specifically suited to 3-player games. Red offered up plenty of removal plus a wheel effect, so it seemed suitable as a second color. In addition, the manafixing and ramp was plentiful in every pool, so that absolutely will not be a problem. To reflect this new default setup, all I'm doing is swapping the checklands (which are moving up in "rarity" and therefore not always be included) for the reveal lands, which will be "common." This swap will make multicolor good stuff decks a little harder to pull off while providing more deckbuilding tools for monocolor and two-color decks. If you're playing a commander nobody's heard of, even better! The biggest gap was auras and equipment to buff the main attacker, but that's something this player can hope for from pools passed to him. I'm somehow surprised by the number of changes Midnight Hunt is bringing, but it's actually less than Forgotten Realms--around three percent of the cube. Kingdoms Role Creator This will automatically create the role tokens for a normal or expanded kingdoms game. My Voltron decks (Uril and then Rafiq) both got to do their thing: piling up equipment for huge swings in the first game and then using Archangel of Thune and Ajani, Greathearted to pile up the +1/+1 counters in the second game. These decks are designed to introduce and level up newer players exploring the Commander format. Advanced Search Engine for Magic: the Gathering cards. Some cards have been reprinted and are now accessible for budget decks, so I swapped these out for pricier options we're less likely to see in paper. However, playing another session with this same deck seems like a stretch, so having all the cards go all the way around every time probably won't happen much if ever. Opponents let Bloodchief Ascension stick around, which enabled a massive life swing when Nekusar wheeled. Another way to win in "stealth mode" is to sit back and wait till your opponents play their best threats and then steal them from under their noses! The new spells are considerably less flexible in terms of what they can do, but they can go in more decks and draw the focus away from 5C nonsense. Fortunately, most of them happen to be wizards, which is a less demanding tribe. Update 12. of July, 2016: Arcane Denial out, Chrome Mox in. For this round, I figured I'd have four new players, all focused on the following approaches: All of these decks are a little forced, filling gaps with generally useful cards that don't necessarily have anything to do with their theme. I'm replacing it with a less powerful card at "common" and moving it up to "rare.". However, the wedge archetypes are much more interesting if they support more than just a couple commanders, and we have not seen anything else emerge in this theme. As it stands now, I still need to increase the proportion of creatures significantly. This blog contains unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. I updated the recommended commanders under the Player Profiles. Beyond this almost every other keyword at common is showing up just once. I was a little worried the aristocrats/sacrifice player would win twice in a row, so it was nice to see the wheels player pull off the comeback. Kaldheim releases with two Commander decks, each containing eight all-new Magic cards. I don't know if this is going to be typical, but it seemed like the opposite of what you'd want. I am also swapping: Looking back that the decks that have been built over the course of more than 20 sessions, I'm seeing only two monocolor decks. Contact | At common, the focus is to encourage 2-color decks, so I've included all the filter lands and reveal lands. That said, there are a few adjustments to be made. Copied to clipboard. I'd been worried about the lack of wheel effects, but damn just one plus Nekusar himself was enough to bring the other decks to the brink, especially Queen Marchesa, who'd been drawing an extra card every turn due to being The Monarch. This pool also made it abundantly clear that I should try switching the humans subtheme for angels. The cards in each suite share a common theme, whether it is a broad function (e.g., removal) or support for a specific archetype (e.g., white cards for the aristocrats archetype). Those issues have been resolved, I'm going ahead with these changes now. We pretended that I used Dovin's Veto on his combo piece (even though I hadn't), and Jeremy naturally went on to win pretty easily. In contrast, quite a few high-power commanders have a "theft" theme, and nearly all of them are in blue. (. Card draw could be a problem for some colors. I was stunned that the essentially auto-built monogreen Omnath Voltran deck I gave Jeremy worked out so well, giving me and Ryan fits for all three games and giving Jeremy two wins. Each player builds a 60-card deck from that pool. Update 11. of July, 2016: C-Sphinx out, JVP in. Jeremy played a fearsome Marchesa deck that made itself an early target. With the plethora of recent reprints, the price on some of the removal in this cube has gone down, so I'm swapping in some fancier options. (If anything, it was better than my own decks typically do!) But first check out one deck's debuts here: Now they'll always be in here, while the higher rarities flicker in and out of pools from session to session. Not approved/endorsed by Wizards. The upgrades I made were not really noticeable except that perhaps I noticed fewer clunkers and squeezed one of the new MDFCs into my deck, so I'd say it was a minor improvement, which is about what I'd expected. Although New Capenna looks like it'll be bringing quite a few changes to our battle box, it's not doing a lot for the cube. Very few of the high-power commanders care about this theme, and the cards I've included don't even push the theme that much. The artifacts theme in URW synergizes with the voltron theme in RWB, strongly pushing a RW Voltron Equipment strategy. His cards were incredibly powerful in combination with each other, essentially allowing for endless mana whenever he wanted, and he didn't care if he had to bin a land or two via the Sylvan Safekeeper to protect his key creatures. They include: As a theme, tokens have felt well supported in the cube so far, even though I did not do so intentionally. Untap the potential in your deck! If you want to make sure you don't ever have mana issues and maybe want to go deep on a narrower theme, you'd go for a 2-color deck. Meanwhile, Ryan went the route of aristocrats with Teysa, which seems to be his thing, and commented on the emergent synergies he was discovered during play. The Intro Packs page for any given block on the wiki should get you .dec files "Flexible": This final pool seemed to have the best cards in white and blue, leaning into a control build with limited and unusual win conditions. They now include options as recent as Strixhaven, which is a big update, since the old list had not been updated in almost a year (i.e., since Theros Beyond Death). However, he also carries both the artifact and creature types and wields both flying and deathtouch, able to block and kill anything your foe swings with. Ashnod's Altar --> Mox Amber: Ashnod's Altar so easily combos with other cards, that it is almost impossible to not stumble into an "oops, I win" situation.
